As the legend goes… fleeing a wildfire, a mother bear and her two cubs dove into and across Lake Michigan. After miles of swimming, the exhausted cubs drowned in the lake, while the mother bear slept ashore, waiting. Impressed by her determination, the great spirit created two islands, one to commemorate each cub. The sleeping mama bear was buried beneath the sands of the dunes, where she rests to this day.
